Summer is usually one of the busiest times of the year for construction related work, this year proved it once again. While we have completed multiple projects in the past few months, some which are still waiting to be installed, this commission turned out to be one of the more memorable.
This project was brought to us by Julie at Turino Kalberer Architects; someone who always produces well thought out, calculated, and elegant designs. We have been lucky enough to be able to produce a number of pieces for Julie and her firm. This time, we had the task of crafting a bed frame enclosure to hide the bed's mechanics, flanking night stands, headboard with integrated lighting, as well as a freestanding media unit. The wood species used throughout is Rift Sawn White Oak. Oak is durable, beautiful, and surprisingly easy to work with. Rift Sawn is one of the rarest cuts of lumber; it creates the most waste in the milling process, making it also one of the most expensive cuts. Rift Sawn corresponds to the angle at which the annular rings hit the face of the board. Ideally, Rift Sawn lumber should have the rings at 45 degrees, but anywhere from 30-60 degrees is allowed by industry standards. The 45-degree angle of the annular rings produces a stunning linear and uniform look, something which is essential when you are trying to match up grain and create twin night stands.
We had multiple exposed ends, and just like all our work, we enjoy chasing the grain around the corners creating a 'waterfall' effect. Even though not everyone will notice these small details, it's something that only takes a few extra moments of planning and preparation to make a project truly unique and bespoke. In the above right picture, you can see how we glued on the top and side of the media unit to achieve the 'waterfall' detail. We spray a fine coating of varnish on before gluing up to ensure that no glue will be absorbed into the grain and create a blotchy spot later on in the finishing process.
Here are a few examples of the unique details throughout this project. Above, on the left is a chamfered profile that was put on all the outside edges. In the middle picture is a front view of the nightstand face frame. You can see both the chamfer detail and the 1/4" quirk detail on the inside of the frame, which will create a 1/4" reveal between the cabinet doors and drawers and the face frame once finally assembled. On the right is an example of the linear properties of Rift Sawn White Oak. Both photos on the left are prior to the finishing process, the image on the right has a clear finish on it, providing depth and contrast to the wood.
Above on the left is the end result of the media unit top and side 'waterfall' detail. You can see how the linear grain 'lines' on the top carry through when they make the 90-degree turn onto the side panel. In the middle are the doors for the media unit, which will receive an ornamental pull on each pair of doors. Once again, the uniform grain of Rift Sawn White Oak made it possible duplicate the same grain pattern for each door, creating nearly identical pieces. On the right side are the drawer fronts for the night stands. A combination of the previous two details; the grain flows from the top panel to the bottom one without missing a beat, while the left pair mirrors the right.
While we just recently installed this project, we are waiting for some light fixtures to arrive, so we were unable to get final photos since there were two holes in the headboard where the lights are supposed to go. Hopefully, we will be able to procure some images sometime down the road. The design was exceptional and we hope that the new owner will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed creating it.
